News From Suriname
Two years ago in 2006 the interior of Suriname was flooded. This was because of the rainy season of course but I think also because of the effects of global warming.
We had a lot of help from the Netherlands since Suriname and the Netherlands have a long ( not always so pleasant) history together.
The small Indian and Maroon villages in the interior had a really difficult time. Their houses were under water, the children couldn't go to school and their land for growing vegetables on was destroyed as well.
The story had a good side to it though, since now new schools were build and a lot of the houses were renewed with the donated money.
In Paramaribo we didn't really notice to much from the flooding except that we were asked to send food packages and other stuff for the poor people as well as that roads were under water so you couldn't drive with your car most of the time without getting stuck.
And of course the noise of the endless stream of helicopters flying to the villages.
NOW... two years later the interior is flooded again. Some people even say it is worse. But now there is no help.
It indicates that this is a really big problem.
There has to be done to save these villages in the interior or they will have to move and built their villages at other higher places.
What will be a painful job of course; think of it, moving a whole village and leaving all that they are common with.
In this video you can see how the Tebutop and Apetina were flooded this year, only a week ago.
